Tea and Wine : a Shared Passion
From 19/05/2014 - 16/07/2014

During the fiftieth anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between France and China, and as part of Festival Croisements, The House for the Arts Yishu 8 will take a cultural, artistic and philosophical look at tea and wine with an exhibition, a film and a book.

This « conversation between tea and wine » will reveal the richness of two major symbols of good living and conviviality.
The inspiration for this event was the rediscovery of one of the forgotten jewels of Chinese thought: the Cha Jiu Lun (On Tea and Wine), a tenth century manuscript that celebrates the relative merits of tea and wine. The exhibition will feature unique contemporary objects inspired by these two centuries-old traditions. Tea is forever linked to ceramics and its masters, as wine is to glass and glass makers. The arts of fire in service to the products of the earth. Everything springs from the terroirs, the love of the land and of its bounty. We will celebrate the culture of taste by sharing its experiences and savoir-faire.

Through this wide-ranging approach the arts of tea and wine making will be seen from artistic, traditional yet also contemporary viewpoints. It will showcase an exceptional document: Cha Jiu Lun , a tenth century Chinese treatise written by Wang Fu that extols the relative merits of tea and wine.
Thanks to a collaboration with the Guang Fu Museum, the Cristallerie Saint Louis (Hermès), the House of Baccarat, and private collectors, the exhibition will present exceptional pieces (bowls, teapots, glasses, carafes) – symbols of the sophistication and history of fine tasting.
A film, made for the event, will retrace the on-going conversation between tea and wine in a contemporary setting, thanks to two passionate masters: Jean-Claude Berrouet and Master Tseng.
Finally, the Tea and Wine Machine, a futuristic piece especially made for the exhibition will stand at the very heart of the exhibition. A sort of fabulous alembic, it symbolizes the betrothal of the two beverages, and the romantic alliance of the two cultures.

The exhibition, opened to everyone, mixes the scholarly with the innovative in a spirit of conviviality.
